Rhys Mannell

Rhys Mannell is an emerging artist and painter from Newcastle Australia completing a Bachelor of Fine Arts majoring in painting at the National Art School. He studied a Bachelor of Advanced Psychological Science at the University of Newcastle for a year before deferring to pursue painting and study art, an experience which has nurtured his interest in embodiment, intimacy and philosophical questioning. Working with his own body, still life and structural forms, he stages small “Acts” that explore how popular culture machines flatten these experiences. His obsession with Baroque painters such as Reni, Cagnacci and Piazzetta informs a slow, careful and attentive touch in his making. Mannell’s work is held in private collections with his graduate exhibition marking a key step in his professional practice going forward.
